When a tooth goes through trauma or is overtaken by a large cavity, the nerve will become infected, leading to pain, swelling, and abscesses. A root canal will then be performed to remove the infected nerve and blood supply from the tooth, and the root will be sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth. The tooth will also be prepared to receive a protective cap, or crown, to ensure the success and longevity of the underlying root canal. The patient will also be placed on oral antibiotics before, during and after the root canal to rid the body of any residual infection.
Dr. Silver will assess the tooth or teeth affected by nerve pain and will determine the course of treatment. She also works closely with area specialists for special, advanced cases.
